Getting your pension paid in Malaysia

United States

Social Security

Yes. Social Security can be paid straight into a bank in Malaysia by international direct deposit: Malaysia is on SSA's list of direct deposit countries, through a multi-country bank contract.

SSA POMS. Checked Oct 8, 2026.

United Kingdom

State Pension

It can be paid to you in Malaysia, but Malaysia is not on GOV.UK's list of countries where the State Pension goes up every year, so it stays at the rate you first receive there.

GOV.UK. Checked Oct 8, 2026.

Canada

Old Age Security

Paid while you live outside Canada if you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after age 18. Canada has no social security agreement with Malaysia, so time in Malaysia does not count toward OAS.

Canada.ca. Checked Oct 8, 2026.

Other countries: check whether your pension can be paid abroad, whether it keeps rising with inflation there, and whether your country has a social security agreement with Malaysia.

How Malaysia taxes you

Malaysia taxes income earned in or derived from Malaysia. You are generally tax resident after 182 days or more in a calendar year. Residents are in principle taxed on foreign-sourced income they bring into Malaysia, but foreign-sourced income received in Malaysia from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2036 may be exempt, subject to conditions (the exemption covers all classes of income except income received through a partnership business in Malaysia). For MM2H, the tourism ministry lists no tax on foreign funds or income, and no tax on fixed-deposit interest, as a benefit. Interest on deposits in licensed Malaysian banks is tax exempt, and Malaysian dividends are tax free up to MYR 100,000 a year, with 2% on the part above. Income from Malaysia is taxed at 0% to 30% for residents. The income tax scale:
