About EarlyRetireAbroad

EarlyRetireAbroad is an independent guide for people who plan to retire in another country, early or on time. It started as a guide for Americans and now writes for readers from any country, with notes for the US, the UK and Canada where their rules differ.

What you will find

Where the numbers come from

Country pages take their figures from primary sources: the law and official gazette, immigration and tax authorities, national statistics offices, hospitals' own sites, the World Bank, the US State Department, the Social Security Administration, GOV.UK and Canada.ca. Each figure shows its source and the date we last checked it. When we cannot find a figure in a source like these, we leave it out and say so.

Rules change. Before you apply for a visa, move money or file a tax return, confirm the current rule with the authority named in the sources, or with a licensed professional. Nothing here is legal, tax or financial advice; see the disclaimer.

Older guides

Longer guides and comparisons that do not carry a source list are earlier articles. We are moving them, country by country, to the sourced format. Where an older guide and a country page disagree, the country page is the current one.

How the site is paid for

The site earns money from advertising and from affiliate links: if you sign up for some services through our links, we may be paid a commission at no cost to you. This never decides what a page says. Details are in the affiliate disclosure and the editorial policy.
