Getting your pension paid in Hungary
United States
Social Security

SSA POMS. Checked Oct 8, 2026.
United Kingdom
State Pension
It can be paid into a bank in Hungary or a UK account. Hungary is in the European Economic Area, so the pension rises every year as it would in the UK.

Canada
Old Age Security
Paid while you live outside Canada only if you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after age 18. Canada and Hungary have had a social security agreement since October 1, 2003, so periods credited under Hungary's pension program can count as years of residence in Canada for OAS.

Other countries: check whether your pension can be paid abroad, whether it keeps rising with inflation there, and whether your country has a social security agreement with Hungary.
How Hungary taxes you
Hungary taxes its residents on worldwide income at a flat 15%. A third-country national is resident if permanently settled in Hungary, or if Hungary is the only permanent home or the centre of vital interests, or after 183 days in a calendar year. Pensions are exempt from income tax, and the law's definition of a pension includes income a tax treaty treats as a pension and, even without a treaty, the matching benefit paid by a foreign body. Interest, dividends and capital gains are taxed at 15%, and an extra 13% social tax can apply to some of them. The income tax treaty with the United States has ceased to apply from January 1, 2024. The income tax scale:
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| All taxable income | 15% |

Will my UK State Pension go up each year in Hungary?
It can be paid into a bank in Hungary or a UK account. Hungary is in the European Economic Area, so the pension rises every year as it would in the UK.
