Getting your pension paid in Spain
United States
Social Security
Yes. Social Security can be paid straight into a euro account at a Spanish bank: the Social Security Administration routes international direct deposits to Spain through the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and has a sign-up form for Spain (SSA-1199-SP).
SSA POMS. Checked Oct 8, 2026.
United Kingdom
State Pension
It can be paid into a bank in Spain or a UK account. Spain is in the European Economic Area, so the pension rises every year as it would in the UK.
GOV.UK. Checked Oct 7, 2026.
Canada
Old Age Security
Paid while you live outside Canada only if you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after age 18. Canada and Spain have a social security convention (in force since January 1, 1988, with a protocol since May 1, 1997), so periods in Spain can help you qualify.

Other countries: check whether your pension can be paid abroad, whether it keeps rising with inflation there, and whether your country has a social security agreement with Spain.
How Spain taxes you
You become a Spanish tax resident if you spend more than 183 days of the calendar year in Spain, or if your main base of activities or economic interests is there. Residents pay income tax on worldwide income, wherever it arises and whoever pays it. A pension is general income, taxed at progressive rates that combine a state scale and the scale of your region, roughly 19% to 47%; interest, dividends and capital gains are savings income, taxed at 19% to 30%. The special regime for people moving to Spain covers a job, remote work, company directors, entrepreneurs and highly qualified professionals, not retirement. The income tax scale:
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to €12,450 | 19% |
| €12,450 to €20,200 | 24% |
| €20,200 to €35,200 | 30% |
| €35,200 to €60,000 | 37% |
| €60,000 to €300,000 | 45% |
| Over €300,000 | 47% |

What US citizens still report
US citizens file a US return on worldwide income wherever they live; the US has an income tax treaty with Spain, which can decide which country taxes some income. Two reports cover money held abroad:
| FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) | Over $10,000 combined, any time |
| Form 8938, single, living abroad | Over $200,000 at year end or $300,000 any time |
| Form 8938, married filing jointly | Over $400,000 at year end or $600,000 any time |

Pension and tax questions
Can I get US Social Security paid in Spain?
Yes. Social Security can be paid straight into a euro account at a Spanish bank: the Social Security Administration routes international direct deposits to Spain through the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and has a sign-up form for Spain (SSA-1199-SP).
Will my UK State Pension go up each year in Spain?
It can be paid into a bank in Spain or a UK account. Spain is in the European Economic Area, so the pension rises every year as it would in the UK.
Is my pension taxed in Spain?
Yes. Spain taxes residents on worldwide income, so a foreign pension is taxed at roughly 19% to 47%, depending on the region. Under the US-Spain treaty a private pension is taxable only in Spain, while US Social Security may also be taxed by the US, and Spain then deducts the US tax paid. US citizens still file a US return.
Do I still file a US tax return?
Yes, US citizens file on worldwide income wherever they live, and report foreign accounts on an FBAR once they pass $10,000 combined at any point in the year.
Does Spain tax US Social Security?
Yes. A Spanish resident pays Spanish income tax on it. The US-Spain treaty also lets the US tax Social Security paid to a resident of Spain, and Spain then deducts the US tax actually paid, up to the Spanish tax on that income.
How much tax would I pay on $90,000 of income in Spain?
It depends on the mix of income and your region. Pension and other general income is taxed on a progressive scale from 19% on the first €12,450 up to 45% between €60,000 and €300,000, on the state guide; interest, dividends and gains are taxed at 19% to 30%.
Can a retiree use the Beckham law?
No. The special regime is for people who move to Spain for a job, remote work, a company directorship, an entrepreneurial activity or highly qualified work, so a pensioner pays the normal rates.
Can I get Social Security paid in Spain?
Yes. The Social Security Administration pays by international direct deposit into euro accounts at Spanish banks, with a sign-up form for Spain.
