Getting your pension paid in Croatia

United States

Social Security

Yes. Social Security can be paid straight into a bank account in Croatia: the Social Security Administration routes international direct deposits to Croatia through the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and a processor bank in Croatia, using your Croatian IBAN. There is a sign-up form for Croatia (SSA-1199-OP50).

SSA POMS. Checked Oct 8, 2026.

United Kingdom

State Pension

It can be paid into a bank in Croatia or a UK account. Croatia is in the European Economic Area, so the pension rises every year as it would in the UK.

GOV.UK. Checked Oct 7, 2026.

Canada

Old Age Security

Paid while you live outside Canada only if you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after age 18. Canada and Croatia have had a social security agreement since May 1, 1999, so periods credited under Croatia's pension program after age 18 can count as years of residence in Canada for OAS.

Other countries: check whether your pension can be paid abroad, whether it keeps rising with inflation there, and whether your country has a social security agreement with Croatia.

How Croatia taxes you

Croatia taxes its residents on worldwide income. You are resident if you own or have use of a home in Croatia for 183 days without a break, or are present for 183 days, across one or two calendar years, so owning a home there can make you resident on its own. Pensions are taxed with employment income on a two-band scale whose rates each city or municipality sets within legal limits, after a personal allowance of €600 a month. Pension recipients pay only 50% of the annual tax due on their pension; the source does not say whether this covers pensions from abroad. Interest, dividends and short-held capital gains are taxed at a flat 12%. Croatia has no income tax treaty with the United States. The income tax scale:

Over €60,00025% to 33%
